ABOUT THE ALLIANCE

The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees (ACFT) is a dedicated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rooted in Wilmington, NC, with a mission to preserve, protect, and plant trees to enhance the quality of life for all in the Lower Cape Fear region. Since our founding in 2015, ACFT has become a trusted advocate for urban forestry, addressing the urgent challenges of declining tree canopy coverage caused by severe storms, rapid development, and climate change.

Our impactful initiatives include planting over 3,000 native trees, distributing more than 15,000, and empowering residents through programs like Tree Stewards. This volunteer-driven effort trains community members to care for newly planted trees, fostering a shared commitment to a greener future. By prioritizing planting and care in underserved areas, we promote tree equity, ensuring every neighborhood experiences the environmental, health, and economic benefits of trees.

CFT also champions the preservation of mature forests and old-growth trees, recognizing their irreplaceable role in supporting biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and maintaining resilient ecosystems. These advocacy efforts are crucial to safeguarding the region’s environmental legacy.

Through educational workshops, walking tours, and events, ACFT inspires and engages the community. Initiatives like Williston Oaks connect younger generations with the mission of tree preservation, fostering meaningful relationships with nature. Our strong community partnerships bolster the region’s resilience against urban heat islands, poor air quality, and stormwater challenges.

Together, we’re creating a healthier, more sustainable environment—one tree at a time.

Our mission is to preserve, protect and plant trees to enhance the quality of life and health for present and future generations in the Lower Cape Fear area.
